Start into the new year

The start of 2022 was difficult for the Frankfurt HC women's handball team - many matches had to be postponed due to Corona. However, the balance at the beginning of March with three matches won is respectable. Only the match in the top game against table leader HC Rödertal was lost by the women from the Oder city.

The women from Oderstadt mastered their first home match of the new year with an unchallenged 42:27 (20:10) victory against the Bundesliga reserve of SV Union Halle-Neustadt on 22 January in front of 300 enthusiastic spectators. Coach Wolfgang Dahlmann sent a changed team onto the floor and had, among others, the 17-year-old Lithuanian youth national player Gerda Kairyte play from the beginning on the playmaker position. The team was initially taken by surprise with an offensive 4:2 defensive variation and a press defence against the two Frankfurt back players Michéle Dürrwald and Monika Odrowska. "We were actually not prepared for that because Halle usually defends in 6:0," admitted coach Wolfgang Dahlmann. "But the team and especially Gerda Kairyte found good solutions," the coach praised. Thanks to good defence and a strong Mandy Schneider in goal, the score was already 11:6 after a quarter of an hour. This lead grew to 20:10 by the break. After the break, the hosts quickly increased their lead to 30:15 (45th). Only in the final battle the Frankfurt women lost concentration and conceded a few more goals. Coach Dahlmann criticised the lack of concentration, but was overall very satisfied with the players' performance.

It was an honour for me to start today and I made the best of it. We solved the initial situation well as a team with help from the outside and the experienced players.

After another long break due to Corona illnesses, the home match against SC Markranstädt, a direct pursuer of the third league duel and in the fight for a qualification place for the second league promotion round, was on the agenda on 1st March. Although the Oderstadt team had to play without some players, they were able to win 37:24 (19:8) against the short-staffed visitors and consolidate their second place in the table.
Junior player Gina Kaczmarek (16) made her debut

in the women's team. And after the break, coach Dahlmann also took the opportunity to give several young players extended playing time. However, the joy was dampened by a hand injury to Michéle Dürrwald, who was taken to hospital for further clarification. Coach Wolfgang Dahlmann said after the game: "The young players in particular underpinned the high percentage of the game with good performances and great goals. But there is also a new spirit in the team. The older players are helping the younger ones, which was not always the case. We are on a very good path and if we manage to keep these players, all roads are open to us."

The Frankfurt HC unfortunately lost the top match in the third division on 5 March to league leader HC Rödertal with 22:33 (7:20). Despite the second defeat of the season, the team from the Oder city remains the closest rival of the team from Rödertal and needs six points from the remaining six games to secure their participation in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga.
Right from the start, the team from Oderstadt had problems against the aggressive and offensive 5:1 defence of the hosts. The hosts were completely different, with almost every attacking attempt resulting in a goal, which is why they were quickly 7:2 ahead. The Frankfurt team also struggled in defence, leaving too many gaps for their opponents to exploit effectively. The 20:7 at the break already spoke for itself. After the break, Frankfurt's performance stabilised. Michéle Dürrwald in particular did not want to surrender to a possible debacle without a fight. In the end, the Frankfurt team even managed to win the second half 15:13.

"Rödertal's defence was insurmountable for us, at least in the first half. It's not that we don't have tactical concepts against such a defence. They were just not implemented. Of course, at the end of the day I'm extremely disappointed, but you have to acknowledge Rödertal's superiority without jealousy." Wolfgang Dahlmann (Coach Frankfurter HC)

Last Saturday, the Frankfurt HC won 26:23 (15:7) at home against HV Chemnitz. Although the Frankfurt women quickly built up a 6:0 lead, they did not take advantage of all the opportunities, which is why the guests then found their way into the game and at least made it more balanced (10:5/19th). Substitute Fabienne Fournier, 15, who made her women's day debut in the 20th minute, scored three blistering goals from the right wing. "That was really exciting," smiled the student athlete. Due to many changes and line-up variations, the Frankfurt women's game line got a bit lost from the 40th minute onwards, so that the comfortable lead dwindled more and more and finally only amounted to three goals - without ever being in serious danger, though.

Tactical instructions from coach Wolfgang Dahlmann to Maxi Fuhrnann

"In the first half, we sometimes got in our own way with our finishes, but in the second half we completely lost concentration and will. We took the game a bit too lightly. Chemnitz, on the other hand, gave everything until the end. We didn't keep up the tempo and didn't implement the coach's instructions well. We have to do that better in the future."  Michéle Dürrwald (back player Frankfurter HC)
